Many people in the United States spend a great deal of time behind the wheel of a vehicle, making it easy to forget the power of the vehicle they are driving. In fact, something as simple as momentarily crossing a dividing line could ultimately have devastating consequences. Even though it is easy for a motor vehicle accident to occur -- and happen so quickly that a driver does not have time to respond -- police in Virginia have charged a driver with DUI following a recent crash that resulted in a fatality.
The incident happened during the evening hours of a day in late March. According to reports, a 35-year-old male was driving a sports utility vehicle south. Police believe that his vehicle crossed into oncoming traffic where the SUV struck a motorcyclist.
Unfortunately, the motorcyclist, a 30-year-old man, died at the scene of the accident. The driver of the SUV was reportedly uninjured and wearing a seat belt. Reports indicate that the incident remains under investigation.
Despite the ongoing nature of the investigation, the driver of the SUV is facing charges of DUI and vehicular manslaughter. Despite the accusations, it is unclear what his blood alcohol content was at the time of the incident or how it was determined. Though being the subject of a criminal investigation is daunting for many people in Virginia, having an experienced criminal defense attorney on their side as they respond to accusations against them can help defendants feel more confident in the decisions that they make, including whether to fight the accusations in court or negotiate a plea deal if one is offered.
