DUI suspected in fatal Virginia car accident

On Behalf of | Jan 13, 2020 | Dui Defense

When a car accident results in serious injuries, the desire to hold someone criminally responsible is understandable. However, the fact is that car accidents can happen for a variety of reasons, such as a driver miscalculation, which is not necessarily criminal behavior. Despite this, law enforcement officials in Virginia believe that a recent fatal accident was the result of driving under the influence, or DUI.

The incident happened one morning on a day in December. According to reports, a vehicle operated by a 22-year-old and occupied by his mother, sister and grandparents was stopped at a red light. Unfortunately, police say that a vehicle driven by a 56-year-old man struck the rear of the vehicle.

The 79-year-old grandmother of the younger driver reportedly died instantly while his 80-year-old grandfather died weeks later. The driver and his sister suffered serious injuries. The driver of the second vehicle was arrested, charged with driving while intoxicated and aggravated involuntary vehicular manslaughter. Reports indicate that the incident remains under investigation.

The loss of life is always a tragedy. Despite the DUI and other charges against the other driver allegedly involved in the accident, it is unclear precisely what evidence supports them. In the coming weeks and months, the defendant in this case will have to make several decisions that will likely have a significant impact on the rest of his life — decisions that he may feel unprepared to make on his own. Fortunately, there are experienced professionals  in Virginia who can help those in such a situation fully understand all of their options, allowing them to make informed decisions.
